Corporation tax – The reference will be your 10 digit company UTR, plus a further 7 digit number that denotes the accounting period, in the format 1234567890A00106A. You may have to phone HMRC on 01236 785057 to check this last number.

 

Self assessment – The reference will be your 10 digit UTR plus the letter K at the end.

 

PAYE – The reference is your 13 digit accounts office reference, which is three numbers denoting your employer tax office, two letters and then an eight digit number. This is followed by a four digit number that identifies the year and month. So the year 2009/10 will be shown as 10 followed by the month, 01 – 12, month 13 can be used to indicate a retrospective or additional payment. So the reference will look like this for month 3 of 2009/10 year: 333PG003333331003. 17 digits in total.

 

VAT – This is your nine digit vat number.
